Islam was started by Muhammad, a man who received visions from Allah through the angel Gabriel. Being illiterate, Muhammad spoke his visions to a man who wrote the Quran. Islam spread quickly through militiant conquests of the middle east. Islam is now one of the largest religions in the world, with a quarter of the earth’s population claiming Islam as their faith. 9. The following are some key events in the life of Muhammad and the history of Islam. Around AD 610, Muhammad began to be troubled by visions that he thought to be demonic. A wife of his by the name of Khadija convinced him that his visions were God. Muhammad began delivering the messages that he had received to Muslims who could read and write, thus creating the Quran. Muhammad was kicked out of Mecca in AD 622, which led him to flee to Medina. On January 11, AD 629, Muhammad conquered Mecca with ten thousand warrior-followers. Muhammad died in AD 632. 10. Sunni, Shiite, and Shia are the three main divisions of Islam. 11. Islam does not distinguish between spiritual and secular. 12. Conformity is important in Islam because Muslims view disagreement as weak. Individualism is dangerous because “the very idea of innovation was criminalized.” (UTT p. 58) 13. Christianity is just as prone to groupthink and idolatry, however, these things are not enforced by our religious leaders. We are just as susceptible to temptations of idolatry
