In 1954, French said we out, not worth it. USA said OK we will teach South Vietnam to fight the Communist. Americans did not learn much from the Korean War.
11/18/15 (Lecture 22) 1950s and 60s Foreign Policy The “New Look” and Mutually Assured Destruction o Cuba Bay of Pigs (Spring 1961) Cuban Missile Crisis (Fall 1962) o Iran o Vietnam Ho Chi Minh and Ngo Ding Diem Vietcong (VC) Gulf of Tonkin Paris Peace Accords (Jan 1973) Communism was seen as evil and a threat to USA (In every way possible) We need a new look. 2 ways: Biggest and Best atomic bombs Air power. (Airplanes. All you need is one and one bomb) Mutually Assured Destruction: If USA and Russia were to go to war, they have such big and deathly bombs that both sides would affected terribly.
CIA New Look: Send them in and start a military coup against a communist regime. Cuba CIA was very important in USA policy in 1950s-60s. Castro came in with his friends and said what America is doing with Cuba, we don’t want that. We want to do our own things. Castro led a military coup against American-back Batista. Russia backed Castro (Communism) very good to have an ally so close to USA. Cuban Government owned business, Cuban goods are going to stay in Cuba, not going to be in USA. Nationalized American businesses. Eisenhower broke relations with Cuba and invited CIA in for a chat. It’d be great if Castro was gone. Bay of Pigs o CIA hashed up a plan for Eisenhower. Went down to Miami and found Cubans who left Cuba. Idea was, CIA would train and armed Cuban Exiles, give them a strategic and tactical plan to overthrow Castro, and bring things back to normal. Kennedy elected into President while this was happening and he was good with it. In 1961, 1300 Cuban anti- Castro exiles who were trained and armed by the CIA. Landed in Bay of Pigs. The whole plan rested one thing to happen, that all the Cubans who were still there would welcome the 1300 Cuban anti-Castro. Castro forces met them at the Bay of Pigs and destroyed them. Humiliating to JFK and the USA. o Compromised the morality of USA. Reinvigorated the Cubans dislike of USA. o Accomplished nothing. Bay of Pigs hurt JFK (he was in office for 4 months when it went down) ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) October of (16 th ) 1962 when CIA came into JFKs office and showed him the missiles in Cuba. Made MAD feel kinda real… October 22 nd 1962, JFK went on TV. The US Military is on high alert, Russia has planes to invade the US. The US will turn any Soviet ship headed to Cuba. Warned, any attack on US soil will cause a full scale Nuclear War. Americans WERE ABSOLUTLY TERRIEFED. Russia agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba and not to bring anymore. Whole thing only lasted 13 days. Nothing
