This seemed strange to me because they claimed that women were the ones who were overly sexual, yet the reason prostitution wasn’t banned was because of male demand. There was also a double standard of sexual morality, and even though they knew it, it still made sense to society for some odd reason. A quote that stuck out to me was, “Although poverty and desperation might excuse a man who committed theft…under circumstances even homicide could be justified, the canonists admitted no circumstances to excuse fornication and prostitution.” So men could kill someone with a reason, but there was no reason at all for a woman to make money or have sex? This makes absolutely no sense to me, but men obviously had different mindsets. What was the status of women in the Middle Ages?
