and reject or ignore everything else, and selective listeners have their own agenda of interesting and valuable topics and disregard or are disinterested in others’ agendas” (Executive Advisory, n.d.). I do this from time to time, but not often. For example, our boss talked to us about a possible performance review raise. He went on to discuss the ramifications and the checklist of the performance review, but all I heard was we were getting a raise. Everything else was like chit-chatter. My co-worker had to explain to me later that the raise was based a 3 part performance review and our growth on the state test. In conclusion, in all aspects of communication, to ensure your message is getting across there are several things you can do. The best things for me to do to prevent or lessen these practices is to stop what I am doing, make eye contact with the person talking and ask them to repeat parts of their message or I can restate what was said to me for clarification. This will definitely help with my pseudo-listening. As far as being on the receiving end of a conversation, I can prepare my responses. “Response preparation refers to our tendency to rehearse what we are going to say next while a speaker is still talking” (Communication in the Real World, 2016, p.1). The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
