Bioethical Analysis Bioethical issues raised with this case were raised by both sides, her parents focused on the Sanctity of life. “The Sanctity of Life, the sacredness of human life. All human beings must be protected. This means that we may have to become advocates for people who cannot speak forthemselves, such as children and elderly” (Fermgen, 2016) and in the case of Terri, those in a vegetative state. Her husband on the other hand focused on the respect for autonomy and believed that removing the feeding tube would be in accordance with what his wife would have wished. Her husband presented multiple witnesses that conferred with his report for Terri’s end of life wishes whilst her parents brought her strict religious background as evidence that she would not have chosen euthanasia. Conclusion For the case of Terri Schiavo, the bioethical decisions made by her healthcare providers focused interventions that would benefit her while doing no harm. The providers strived to maintain her and revive her to her previous level of alertness. Initially the placement of the feeding tube acted to sustain life while they attempted additional interventions to return her to her baseline level of existence. As time passed the providers switched focus from attempting to return her to previous levels of alertness and aimed at preserving her physical vessel. In the end her providers, acted to uphold her perceived end of life wishes as determined by the courts and removed her feeding tube and provide comfort until her passing.
