spirits on them. Scared of the consequences, Mary changes her stories. Elizabeth Proctor courageous act occured in Act 4 when her husband John Proctor chose to be hanged instead of confess that he saw the Devil. “Do what you will. But let none be your judge. There be no higher judge under Heaven than Proctor is! Forgive me, forgive me John-I never knew such goodness in the world” (Miller 884). Elizabeth wants John to do what he thinks is right and what will make him happy. “He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him” (Miller 887). Goody Proctor knows that her husband’s faith has been restored by deciding to rip up his confession and be taken off to be hanged. She will not try to alter his decision and as a result John is free of his guilt. The act of courage shown by all three characters exhibits their bravery and fearlessness towards the conflict. Mary Warren, John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor all show courage but they all have a purpose and that’s to put others before them. They are courageous, doing what they know is right in order to save others. Works Cited Miller, Arthur. The Crucible .
