it all because she had to stand up to McCarthy. In reference to the “Statement of the Seven Republican Senators,” Smith said, “I am grateful that the senator[s]… have concurred in that declaration and have authorized me to announce their concurrence” (Declaration 623). After this speech, 6 out of the 7 senators resigned their signatures from this article. This shows the power of McCarthy, and the effect he has on politics. The senators signed their name on a document, but Margaret Chase Smith gave a whole speech, and couldn’t resign from that, and she knew that. Margaret Chase Smith was courageous in the ways she rebutted Joe McCarthy’s speech and tactics. Smith stated in her speech that “the American people are sick and tired of being afraid to speak their minds lest they be politically smeared as “Communists” or “Fascists” by their opponents” (Declaration 622). She touches on the way McCarthy scares the country by accusing innocent people of being communists. Smith discusses McCarthy’s strategy indirectly in her speech, and by doing this she is standing up to him and being audacious.

5 Jacques McCarthy and Smith’s personas in their speeches differ dramatically. McCarthy tries to show that he is a regular guy, trustworthy, and patriotic. He does this by pointing out flaws in the government and exposing the “truth” of what is happening inside our country. People believe him because he provides statistics and evidence, for example he declared “ I have in my hand fifty-seven cases of individuals who would appear to be either card carrying members or certainly loyal to the communist party, but who nevertheless are still helping to shape our foreign policy” (Schrecker 240). Later, however, McCarthy was never able to present these documents. When he appeared before the Tydings committee, who were responsible for investigating McCarthy, he was only able to produce 9 cases, and none were strong cases. The Tydings committee called him a fraud and a hoax. His personality he used during his speech was a facade to trick citizens. Margaret Smith on the other hand was straightforward, and not afraid to say what she meant. Smith stated to the senate “I speak as a republican. I speak as a woman. I speak as a United States senator. I speak as an American” (Declaration 621). She represented a wide array of citizens, which in turn provided many view points on the subject of our country. A person’s reputation can define their personality, and in the case of McCarthy’s and Smith’s it does completely. The emotions that McCarthy and Smith play off of were a big role in their speeches because it could have persuaded an audience in either direction. McCarthy used fear to captivate his audience. McCarthy quoted a historical figure that once said “When a great democracy is destroyed, it will not be because of enemies from without, but rather because of enemies from within” (Schrecker 238). It can be a frightful thought that communists have infiltrated the government and will inevitably destroy the democracy in the United States. McCarthy made
