dependency. This is when a person has used a substance for so long, that their body has adapted to having it. This range from tobacco, alcohol, street drugs, or even in some instances food. After these substances have been in the body so long, a person is dependent on them. The only way to fix this dependency is through detoxification. The fourth and final category is addiction. Addiction is in a separate category altogether. Addiction changes everything about a person. It doesn’t only alter their bodies, but it affects their state of mind as well. It can and does alter the way people think and it becomes more irrational. Addiction is when a person feels like they must have the substance to survive. It has become far worse than dependency an addict will do just about anything to get and use their drug

of choice. Over 40 million American’s ages 12 and older have addictions. That is one in seven Americans suffer from addiction. (Samms, 2012) That is a mind-blowing number of people who suffer from abuse or addiction, no wonder why addiction is such a problem in the medical community and in our society today. Out of all those who suffer from addiction, on average one out of ten people seek and receive the treatment they need.
