reformation, to a journey from a feudal society to what we know as democracy. Westminster Abbey has reflected the character England’s social, political, cultural for more than 1000 years (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2019). It is unknown if the architect was English or French, but he was greatly influenced by French cathedrals, using the ideas of an apse with radiating channels and using classic Gothic features like pointed arches, ribbed vaulting, rose windows, and flying buttresses. The design is based on what was called the continental system of geometrical proportion, but it includes English features such as single instead of double aisles and along nave with wide transepts. The political developments that best reflect the character of the period are that Henry III tore down the church that stood in its place to build a larger church to show his devotion to St. Edward the Confessor, provide a new shrine for the saint and a place for him to be buried near the shrine. After his death, future generations also added onto the Abbey to provide their own burial places at the site (Architecture, n.d.).
