Act 2 Scene 1 ●Polonius asks Reynaldo to make some general inquiries about Laertes and spy on his son. ●Tells him to lie and say bad things in order to see how people truly perceive his son. ●Reynaldo says this is dishonourable. ●Reynaldo says this will make him look bad. Polonius says the ends justify the means. As long as you get to where you want to go, it doesn't matter what you do to achieve the goal. ●AvsR- Polonius appears to be a caring father but in actuality thinks the worst of Laertes. ●Polonius says not to make him look like a criminal but say enough to make him appear wild and see if the friends agree. ●“By indirections find directions out” (line 71). By being sneaky you can find out what you need. ●Ophelia reports that Hamlet is acting strange, looks like he saw a ghost. ●Ophelia says that he took her by the wrist. She told him not to see her. ●Polonius inquires about Hamlet and wants to tell the king that it's because he is in love that he's acting crazy. ●Genius and solved the problem. Act 2 Scene 2 ●King and Queen have Hamlet’s friends spy on him and recount his every move. ●They will be compensated and it is for the best. ●Polonius enters, convinced that Ophelia is the reason behind Hamlet’s madness. ●Says he will explain later, Queen is not convinced - thinks it is the death and remarriage. ●Fortinbra’s Uncle has been able to restrain his nephew from invading Denmark. ●In return, the king asks that Denmark help in attacking Poland and allow Fortinbras to pass through Denmark on the way to Poland. ●Polonius is convinced that Hamlet has gone mad because of Ophelia, pulls out a private love letter that Hamlet wrote to her. ●Hamlet is mad because Polonius has forbidden Ophelia to see Hamlet. ●Polonius suggests that they hide themselves behind a curtain, to watch Ophelia return Hamlet’s things.
