Of the two (2), recommend the type of processor that would be better suited for a computer that is primarily used for the following: Word processing, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and computer gaming. Provide a rationale for your response. Multiprocessing is a term used un high performance computing used to described the capability of a computer, or system, to use more than one central processing units (CPUs). The idea behind it is that we can increase performance of a computer system, if we increase the number of CPUs in it and all of them share the system’s memory and input/output (I/O) facilities. There are two basic configurations of multiprocessing systems, symmetrical and master-slave. In the first all the processors have the same access to all components, including the operating system, memory and system resources. The main advantages of symmetrical multiprocessing are increased throughput and reliability. The work and computing that can be done with symmetrical multiprocessing will be directly related to the amount of cores. In other words, more cores mean more work that can be done. Also, if one of the cores fails, the work can be distributed to the remaining cores for completion. The disadvantage is that since the workload is distributed evenly, one of the cores might be stalled waiting for another to finish processing what it needs to continue. On the other hand, in a master-slave configuration, there is a master core, which controls the system, its resources and the scheduling. The rest of the cores are just waiting to be assigned work by the master. The obvious advantage on this configuration is on the scheduling part. The master can determine how to evenly distribute workload hence making that system not to stall like on symmetric multiprocessing. The drawback is reliability, is the master fails, the system fails. Out of the three scenarios given: Word processing, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and computer gaming, I believe that symmetrical multiprocessing is ideal for both word processing and excel spreadsheets, mainly simple spreadsheets used by typical end-users. In the case of complex excel spreadsheets, with multiple calculations and formulas integrated on them; especially if complex calculations and analysis is done with them, and computer gaming, the ideal configuration would be master-slave. The idea is that the master can maximize the resources of the system when computing and executing complex instructions needed for both complex excel spreadsheets and computer gaming. The typical work processing and excel that a normal end-user would do on a computer, does not justify the higher cost of master-slave configuration.
