Scientists can make a positive difference in our culture by including God indifficult situations. The temptation we all face is to gravitate towardnegativity in tough circumstances. Beaudoin (2011) has suggested that weuse five times as many neuron networks in the brain associated withnegative affect rather than positive affect. With a greater number of negativeneuron networks available in our brains, it is far easier to engage in negativeconversations with our peers. Unfortunately, such negative talk only erodesour thoughts about our planet Earth and promotes an atmosphere of despair. However, by including God in our prayers concerning challenges in theenvironment, we engage the God of heaven on our side to become a positiveinfluence. Just like Nehemiah and Abraham, God really listens to our prayersand he wants to work on our behalf. God’s interaction with people who prayconcerning earthly matters causes a direct effect in the harmony of workingout God’s purposes. He invests himself in issues that matter to us.After reading the devotional, reflect on the following questions:a.How can you serve as a positive influence in creating a positiveattitude about the care of planet Earth?b.Describe an environmental concern where you took a matter to God inprayer and explain how He intervened.
3.2 Quiz: Plate TectonicsPhysical GeologyChapter 10 & Plate Tectonics Video SegmentsThe idea of plate tectonics began with the notion of continental drift. In 1915Alfred Wegener proposed the idea that if we fit the continents together, we wouldsee continents like South America and Africa fitting somewhat nicely together likepieces of a huge jigsaw puzzle. His ideas were not accepted by his colleagues atthe time, largely because they could not explain how continental drift occurred. The observations of changes in the sea floor, such as sea floor spreading, provided an answer for how continental drift could occur. Together, continentaldrift and sea floor spreading are two important concepts that lay the foundationfor the plate tectonic theory.
