5In democratic leadership style the main cons is that it takes to long to make decisions anddoes not lend itself to an acute care setting (Specchia, 2021). In the case of Marty, this is not thecase. Another disadvantage of a democratic leadership style is that there are many opinions givenby employees, and some employee may want to set harsher solutions to an employee such asMarty, and other employees may want to take a more empathetic approach. This can leaveemployees feeling that here wants were not met. The range of solutions is so broad, that it canleave employees left feeling unheard or that their opinion did not really affect the outcome. Withthis style of leadership, it can also take a lot of time to implement solutions and it can makeemployees feel that nothing is really being done.Servant leadership being implemented in a case where an employee’s work is decliningcould be very effective. With Marty’s work performance declining, a servant leadership stylewould make her feel she is supported and deeply care about by the entire organization. As awhole organization solution to helping Marty overcome her work life balance would be offeredto her. With this type of leadership, it inspires fellow employees to deeply care about Marty’ssituation, and wanting to help. This creates a supportive and empathetic mentality, instead of theanger and frustrations fellow employees are having. Doing nothing about the problem has led tothis feeling in the unit. By showing support and a plan has been put in place to help Marty couldease the resentment and foster the team to step up and support Marty. This type of leadership isoften seen with spiritual leaders. The other belief with servant leadership would be the patientsare the center of their work. In this type of leadership, it would emphasize to Marty that herpatients are suffering due to her low work performance, and the team as whole is also suffering. In a servant leadership style this would motivate Marty to work on solving her work life balanceso that she could better serve her patients.
6In servant leadership there is a risk that employees can take advantage of this leadershipstyle. It is founded on the belief that everyone involved is invested and deeply cares about theorganization (Wei, 2020). In a case like Marty’s it could create an environment where andemployee can take advantage of the support to enable the behavior, and opens the opportunity foremployees to be deceptive. Another pitfall seen with this leadership style is the solution theleader sees for the problem cannot align with the person experiencing the problem. Leaders canimplement a solution that they believe will solve the problem without the employee weighing inon what would work best for them.
