Organization of American States (OAS) -headquartered in Washington DC -every state in the Americas is in this organization -they are very fine tuned in what they want -their goals: “strengthen democracy, work for peace and defend human rights -this group goes and oversees elections in the Americas -Cuba was a member then was kicked out although Cuba could be reincorporated -there is a shared culture of ideas in the Americas: 1. democracy is good 2. Individual human rights 3. freedoms are good -former us president jimmy carter often travels to these other countries to oversee elections -the one thing they do the most is overseeing elections and democracy -the Latin Americans want there own OAS but secluding the US and Canada African Union -the second largest supranationalist besides the UN organization but most unsuccessful -they include all the states in Africa other than morocco because of a territorial dispute -they have been trying in African to get together and it just isn’t working -the Union of African states was created in the 1960s to try to unify them then a few decades later the Union of African Unity was created then that morphed into the African Economic Community in the 1980s and they just never did much
