Last year in Charlottesville, North Carolina, a group of right activists held a riot. They legally spewed their hateful beliefs, facing no consequences. Counter-protesters were quick to gather and block these white supremacists from further rioting, but were attacked by an opposingmember in a car. This fascist killed an innocent woman, while also injuring 19 others as well. The Counter-protestors understood the consequences of acting against a group such as this one, but disregarded their own security to prevent freedoms being taken by allowing unstable nazis to roam freely in America. H.L. Mencken was an American journalist, satirist, and cultural critic. He was a very influential writer and wrote many essays on controversial topics, such as this one. In one of his essays he explains, men do not want to be free; they only want to safe. This statement does not apply to modern times, with many protesters compromising their safety to achieve their basic human rights. They place the freedom of an entire people over the wellbeing of oneself.
