When I was young, my peers and I never really noticed our differences. We would all mingle regardless of what each of us looked like. Our similar interests were what attracted us to each other. In high school there is a high prevalence of cliques. These groups forced us into separation, usually according to nationality. My school was predominated by Latinos, but within this group existed subcategories such as: Caribbean, South Americans, Central Americans, and Spaniards. It was difficult for me to comprehend why this separation existed, when our mutuality of hispanic culture and minority status, should have brought us together. The answer is difficult to determine because of the many different factors. The most dominating may be the psychological need for power and to feel superior to others. In order to truly pursue an anthropological analysis of my high school's racial problems, the researcher would need both psychological and linguistic cultural anthropological knowledge. Linguistic anthropology would be useful because all latin american nations have many distinct dialects. The understanding of how languages work and their variations would easily allow a researcher to become integrated within our society. They would
