identifies as LGBT (Bajekal, 2015). The Los Angeles area has the second largest LGBT population after New York City (Romero, 2016). The Official Guide to West Hollywood states that, “more than 40% of West Hollywood’s population identifies as LGBT” (Santa Monica Boulevard, n.d.). West Hollywood is a place where LGBT visitors and residents can feel safe and welcomed. West Hollywood hotels, restaurants, and shops are all gay friendly. The gay nightlife is what West Hollywood is known for in particular, from its “pulsing dance clubs to friendly neighborhood bars” (Santa Monica Boulevard, n.d.). On a monthly city calendar of West Hollywood, LGBT meetups, dinners, walks, dance classes, and speaker meetings (just to name a few) occur every day. This shows that the LGBT community has a huge impact on this city.Living with HIVWest Hollywood also has a high population of residents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or the subsequent condition, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). About 7% of West Hollywood’s population is diagnosed with HIV. This means that 27,000 people are living with HIV or AIDS just in this community (Peters, 2013).This may seem low compared to the risk of getting HIV in Florida on the following map of the United States (CDC, 2016).However, the West Hollywood concentration has the highest percentage of HIV/AIDS afflicted people in the county of Los Angeles. In California, the city of Los Angeles has the largest population of people living with HIV/AIDS followed by San Francisco. According to the city ofLos Angeles, 90% of these infected residents are males. There is a clear correlation between the size of the gay community and the high rate of AIDS, since 67% of these males obtain this infection through male-to-male contact (City of Los Angeles Aids Coordinator’s Office, 2014).What Does This Data Mean? After researching the demographics of West Hollywood, several interesting trends were discovered that linked these groups together. Based on the statistics, a majority of the West Hollywood population is between the ages of 18 and 34, and 65.2% of individuals that are infected with HIV are between the ages of 20 and 39 years old (HIV/AIDS Surveillance in California, 2014). This means that there are large portions of the West Hollywood community made up of single households, young adults, and people living with HIV. While services exist 2December 13, 2016
for each group individually, services that cater to the demographic cross-section are lacking.
