By contrast, Swinburne believes that it is possible to logically explain worldly evils while maintaining God’s omnipotence and goodness.Although God engineers the circumstances in which humans must choose between evil and good, he does not control the ultimate decision made by the humans themselves. Both authors utilize their stance on the free will defense to make a statement regarding the credibility of theist arguments concerning God’s omnipotence and benevolence. The most important assumption made by Mackie and Swinburne concerns their beliefs about the nature of God’s omnipotence, and how it relates to the free will defense. Mackie, on the other hand, argues that the free will defense does not work with the idea of God being bound by the laws of logic and causation that He Himself created. As this assumption is integral to the success of Mackie’s premises, the specifics of this claim will be discussed later in this paper. Mackie and Swinburne’s ideas about the limitations and nature of God’s omnipotence significantly shape their subsequent discussion of evil and free will. believes that evil is a necessary byproduct of human free will, and that free will is of such a high magnitude of goodness that it justifies the resulting evil that takes place.
