may be better able to empathize with similar shortcomings in others and can actively work to improve how we communicate. Through our work in this course, I have realized that I possess some poor listening skills (Communication in the Real World, 2013) and more often than I would like slip into certain defensive communication patterns (Jenkinson, 2014). The biggest obstacle I face in communication is my tendency to interrupt and pseudo-listen (Communication in the Real World, 2013) during certain situations. Having identified that these poor listening practices occur most often when I am communicating with my husband and kids, I can correct these issues by consciously slowing myself down when we’re communicating. By doing this, I can improve my listening at the receiving stage (Communication in the Real World, 2013) by not interrupting and by not trying to impose solutions when they are not sought. I have also learned through this course that I allow too much psychological noise to interrupt effective listening. I am a very sensitive communicator and at times being too sensitive generates unnecessary psychological noise which creates a barrier during the receiving phase of listening (Communication in the Real World, 2013).
