adults (nearly 37%) had low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels that fall in the range where experts recommend cholesterol medicine or had other health conditions putting them at high risk for heart disease and stroke. 55% of adults who need cholesterol medications are currently takingthem. In 2015, 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes Interestingly, Of the 30.3 million adults with diabetes, 23.1 million were diagnosed, and 7.2 million were undiagnosed (American Diabetes Association, 2019).Physical exercise/activity is important because it can help maintain a healthy weight and lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Physical activity for diabetes is beneficial because it makes the body more sensitive to insulin which helps manage diabetes (CDC, 2018). While physical activity helps control blood sugar levels, it also prevents nerve damage and heart disease. Nurses must be sure to aware patients about monitoring their blood sugars before, during, and after physical activity. If their blood sugar is low before exercise, clients should consume a small snack containing 15-30 grams of carbohydrates. If it’s above 240 mg/dL, your blood sugar may be too high (hyperglycemia) to be active safely (CDC, 2018). The CDC (2018) recommends 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as bicycling and the elliptical machine. In order to gain cooperation from the client, the nurse should not force exercise upon the client but to recommend taking it slow and start small. The client should be encouraged to find an activity that they enjoy, pick a a partner, commit to a goal,and schedule their exercise during the week. Other recommendations that nurses can give to theirpatients are to use the stairs instead of the elevator, parking farther away from the grocery store, and/or do jumping jacks during commercial breaks.ReferencesAmerican Diabetes Association.
