Two cases where investigators had signs of tunnel vision due to following clues given by criminal profilers would be, the cases of the Beltway snipers and the murder of Rachel Nickell. The case of beltway snipers resulted in a “series of random, inexplicable shootings in which ten people were killed and three others critically wounded” (2009). The criminal profiler stated that the shooter showed characteristics of an employed disgruntled white man, seemingly in his 20s or 30s driving a white van. In actuality the case involved two black men one 17 and 40 driving a blue sedan. The two were stopped two hours before one of the shooting incidents but were not questioned because they did not fit the description. The murder case for Rachel Nickell the criminal profiler was suspicious of a guy, leading police to try different sting operations for a confession in the case. Later DNA evidence resulted in another man being charged with her murder. The drawbacks are the profilers being wrong in their descriptions of suspects. This causes law enforcement to lose time on the case, and the profiler must then back track and re- asses evidence from the crime scene. A successful criminal profiler is one that assess the evidence effectively and draws efficient descriptions when profiling suspects. The profiler should also be skilled in areas of
