The effect shows that mental illness is something that can not be cured or fixed it is just apart of that person. It creates of cry for help because the mother is trying to get help but leads up to nothing and she is desperate for some help with her son. 8) Paragraph 9: the words “tossed,” “slew,” and “Russian novel” are utilized in this paragraph. How do these words strategically add to the message in this paragraph? What is the effect of using these words? Saying that he has been on many things for medications and that she has tried using guides from a book to help her son but nothing is working at all. It adds a sense that she has tried everything and is at a dead end. By using these words, it showed that the medications aren’t helping and are making his mood way worse.

It shifts to a background story of how michael is actually really intelligent and very bright and that when he is in a happy mood he is the sweetest and able to tell you all about Greek mythology and other things.
