James mentions the reasons for praying, one is to see results. Either spiritual (sin) or physical (sickness), or both. Also he mentions that “ The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective”, (Stulac:1993) . Lastly James instructs that they must keep bringing each other back to the truth, they must help others to trust and hold on to God in times of difficulties like they are doing, Stulac (1993:n.p.) . 1.3.4. Firm warnings concerning the social classes in the believing community The first warning that James write about is the fact of materialism. He warns them not to get materialistic. He knew they might become corrupted by materialism because of their suffering trials of economic hardships from persecution, they might become discouraged, jealous, covetous etc. James encourages believers from the angle of God being the judge and leaving it in His hands. James mentions certain sins of the rich for example greed and injustice, of which the greed consists of living in luxury and the injustice consists of condemning, murdering and cheating workers with their earnings, Stulac (1993:n.p.). James also speaks about patience, not in a singular form, but in plural form. According to ( Stulac:1993) , this patience isn’t just waiting for the difficulties to pass and trusting God during that time. 7

It is more than that, he also explains that. It is to wait while the trials pass and to mature in completeness, but it is also the hope of Christ coming back and to persevere the persecution. A 3 rd view is also deliberate behaviour; the waiting is to be done in strength and action, not in defeat / weakness. 2. Question 2 2.1 The First book of Peter 2.1.1 Historical context of the book of First Peter According to Dunnet (1976:76), 1 Peter was written to bring light in the times of darkness to those suffering affliction and persecution, bringing answers to the questions regarding times of trials. Peter’s answer is that God has a purpose with every difficulty in our lives. Interestingly enough Peter, just like Paul, identifies himself as “Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet 1:1). In turn, this might be in light of knowing the value of the authority that Jesus gave him according to Michaels (2000:n.p.). Through out 1 Peter it is visible that the language is used, as if he describing himself as their brother, in such a way that a sense of personal authority is present. The reality of Peter actually writing the letter himself is hard to believe, with regards to the style of the letter to be more in line with the letter wrote by Silvanus in 1 Peter 5:12. Although the expression and the way it is written is more plausible to believe that Silvanus was only the letter bearer. In light of the audience, the author would have need some help regarding the vocabulary and style as this letter was intended to the five churches of Asia minor – [“Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia”, 1Peter1:2] mentioned by Michaels (2000:n.p.).
