HITECH and HIPPA Standards HITECH Act has widened its scope of privacy and security protections available under HIPPA and increases legal liability for those not noncompliant with the standards and rules. The goal of HITECH with HIPPA is to enhance and improve health information systems not only for providers but for patients. Goals are: Improving quality, safety, efficiency, and reducing health disparities, engage patients and families in their health, improve care coordination, improve population and public health, and ensure adequate privacy and security protection for personal health information.(Sirintrapun &Artz, 2016) Health information systems must maintain integrity and quality of data. Safeguards must be in place to protect the data from compromise by human error, viruses, computer bugs, hardware crashes, and hackers. These safeguards include regular backup of data, offsite backup storage for recovery, error detection in transmissions, interfaces that help staff to enter patient data correctly, and antivirus firewalls to protect programs. Health information systems under the guidance of HITECH and HIPPA must maintain the integrity of the data stored and maintain a backup plan when the system becomes breached or hardware crashes. Healthcare organizations IT departs must ensure that data is being backed up in a routine daily fashion, as well as having a back up to the back up for emergency recovery. These features are informed training to staff about HIPPA rules and regulations, staff log in and log out with passwords, screen privacy protectors, software to protect data from cyber threats, and encryption of data.
