Micro level social relations → ways in which we understand ourselves & interact w others, the structuring of our practical activity in work and family, as citizens & as thinkers; basically person’s individuals interactions with other people ; use these as “clues” to see who/what kind of person they are based on our preconceived notions of a racialized social structure Macro level social relations → to interpret the meaning of race is to frame it social structurally. social structures & commn ideologies of a society ; such as the media, government & common ideologies which include cultural & stereotypical beliefs on race, class, sexuality & gender Can be interpreted through a colorblind lens (welfore// affirmative action bad; race has nothing to do with how the state should reward race) Vs recognizing the racial dimension is social structure → gov policies that are racist vs those that want to remedy prior instances of racism or neutral gov activity from perpetuating effects of such racism Can’t all a sudden consider itself color blind without being racist Summary → society is infused with racial projects ; subjective ; everyone learns some combination of racial classification We are inherently inserted ina racialized social structure Race becomes “common sense” → way of comprehending, explaining & acting in the world
Racial formation guides our expectations Immigrant incorporation “The second generation” of immigrants are subject to conflicting pressure from parents & peers & to pervasive outside discrimination Parents came in search of work or to escape political persecution; second gen (children) Social & economic progress of first gen & material conditions their american children grow to expect Immigrants of today → more racialized (cannot as easily break into barriers of whiteness or “American mainstream); different economic conditions (widening gap of inequality) Haitian second gen → conflict between keeping national idenity & risk being socially ostracized in school (based on stereotypes & accents) or socializing to be Black and making their family saf that they could make into America on the basis of ethnic solidarity & preservation of traditional values Black students → devaluation of education is a direct attack on immigtant parents expectations Their assimilation isn’t into mainstream black culture but into the norms of the inner city Assimilation into native born culture doesn’t always mean path to mobility social and economically Main question is what sector of American society a particular immigrant group assimilates Distinctive sectors → The first, that is commonly-held, is the parallel growing acculturation and integration into the White middle-class as represented by Italian immigrants.
