She reviews quality metrics on a monthly basis and reviews with her staff during the staff meetings. For the metrics that need improvement, Tonya works to identify the cause for the failure and work with her team to develop a plan to correct the practice and improve the quality metric. By doing this she meets Essential III regarding quality improvement. Tonya meets Essentials V and VI by working with the organization to be a part of the ever-changing policies and technologies (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). She works with the Critical Care leadership team and IT department to ensure the beside staff have the best equipment available to care for the patients. She ensures that her leadership team is a part of the changes made in policies that affect quality patient care and outcomes through participating in committees that influence these changes. Tonya also works with multidisciplinary groups to ensure the voice of the nurses she manages are heard as the changes to practice and policy are made. Essential VII is an interprofessional collaboration for improving patient and health outcomes (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). Tonya works to ensure that the nursing units she manages, providers, and other ancillary departments within the hospital have a productive collaborative relationship. She is a member of the Critical Care collaborative team that meets with the intensive care providers to discuss the needs of the patients and nurses within acute care units. Essential IX states that an advanced practice nurse must have the ability to understand nursing and the related sciences and be able to apply that knowledge into practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). Tonya’s job description is to manage the staff of CCU, PCCU, and TOU and to ensure the quality of care provided to the patients cared for in those units. Her sole concern is to ensure the staff provides high quality, evidence-based care to the patients. Tonya is directly involved in collaborating with the departments involved with improving patient outcomes and providing positive change within the organization.
