Of course this isn’t fair, but just as some women marry for money, I guess men had the same idea. Because of this dowry issue, many women wanted separations and had to go through a long process to do so. But it wasn’t impossible to become separated once married. The communities of troubled couples supported wives who were abused and actually condoned separation in cases where domestic disputes could be heard outside of the couples’ homes. But the community supported the wife “with the expectation that the wife would continue to lead an honorable life”, meaning that she couldn’t go off and live with someone else or sleep

around with other men. This is understandable because no one wants to support a dishonorable woman. Women also gained support from their family, and when they separated they often went to live with their family again.
