She has developed her company, and presents a two-
day Nursing Informatics Boot Camp.
She is a prolific author and has written many chapters in
nursing informatics course books ("HIStalk interviews Susan Newbold, Ph.D., RN, owner,
Nursing Informatics Boot Camp," 2015).
Dr. Kathleen A. McCormick served for 30 years in the United States Public Health
Service (USPHS).
During her graduate studies her minor was in computer science (American
Medical Informatics Association, 2008a).
Her first accomplishment came at the National
Institute of Health (NIH) where she used her nursing and computer science knowledge to do
research using the Teknekon system.
She queried the system to find the top nursing problems to
solve (American Medical Informatics Association, 2008a).
She developed and taught with
Virginia Saba the first course on informatics at NIH.
Together, they also wrote many informatics
textbooks.
She worked at Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) to develop
clinical guidelines and clinical decision support tools. After leaving public service, she worked at
SRA International, Inc., as a research scientist in the field of genomics and bioinformatics
(American Medical Informatics Association, 2008a).
Her service on many boards and
committees has had an influence on nursing informatics.
Influence of Contributions to Nursing Practice/Informatics
Dr. Newbold’s influence is on nursing informatics includes providing a forum for nurses
to collaborate about computer systems in nursing through the development of CARING.
It
allowed nurses early in the field of informatics to learn through case studies shared with each
other (American Medical Informatics Association, 2008b).
In 1991, the American Nurses
Credentialing Center offered certification for nursing informatics as a specialty.
There was no

course to take, but Dr. Newbold with friends studied to pass the exam (American Medical
Informatics Association, 2008b).
As a result, she created the Nursing Informatics Boot Camp,
that teaches nurses the content they need to know to pass the certification exam ("HIStalk
interviews Susan Newbold, Ph.D., RN, owner, Nursing Informatics Boot Camp," 2015).
Her
influence continues through her writing and teaching at the university level nursing informatics.
