4.UNderstatement, this could be a commentary on the beauty of a woman being only skin deep 5. Paradox, when one is ignorant, one is usually a folly. The speaker here is saying that it is unwise to be wise 6.Overstatement, of how sad the speaker is 7. Overstatement 8. Overstatement, cowards have been shamed and fooled many times; great ones only die one big death 80. Batter my heart, three personed God 1. The paradox in the first quatrain is in that the speaker is asking the “three personed God” to better his heart through a forceful break, blow, and burn. The three personed God may be a reference to God, Jesus, and the holy spirit, as if my Christian dogma does not fool me. The list of verbs could be addressed to any of the people listed as I cannot really connect the verbs to the Father, the son, or the holy spirit. 2. The speaker compares himself to a town that is captured. God is compared to someone trying to enter that town. God is the usurper, and reason is the devil as it is mentioned as God’s

“viceroy”. 3. Through the onset of lines 9-14, the speaker compares himself to someone that is wedded to god, or at least an obsequious follower of god. Enemy would again be reason, as in order to fully follow God and faithfully believe, God must destroy the enemy of reason. With reason, one can always doubt religion with science. Ravish happens to have a double meaning as ravish can mean to fill someone with an intense delight, but it can also mean to carry on away. God can either fill our speaker with an intense if he ruins reason, or he can carry him away if the speaker chooses to abstain from sex and become faithful to God. 81. Sorting Laundry 1. The metaphor in the first stanza is a metaphor, that much like folding clothing (where each part is folded in after another) the speaker is thinking about letting a lover into his or her life by slowing folding every part of the lover into their life. The poem returns to it in lines 43-45, when the speaker states that if the lover were to leave the speaker, they would be left to fold her own clothing. A psychological association that ties line 41 to lines 42-43 is that once a lover leaves any piece of clothing, they believe that the shirt is only made for them. Everything about the shirt will remind a person about the lover whether its the smell of the shirt, the fit of the shirt, to the patina of the shirt. 2. The length of the poem follows form and function as the poem is incredibly long and disheveled like a “mountain of unsorted wash”. The speaker may feel that she enjoys being a housekeeper as with every pile of clothing (every stanza) remind her of a different time with her lover. 82. I’m Not Complaining 1. The trite language makes the poem feel more real and incredibly casual. The run on sentences feel as if the speaker is trying to get off a lot off his or her mind. Quite frankly, I am not able to infer a possible circumstance for this poem, other than the fact that the speaker is complaining to someone or is trying to answer a simple question with a long winded answer.
