To the extent possible, the BSA Conservation Committee should maintain and improve interactions with IUCN and other related conservation groups. We expect that this increased collaboration can results in more productive fund raising efforts for the conservation of plant resources. BSA members who have an interest in interacting with the IUCN through the Specialist Groups or through other measures are encouraged to contact Bill Hahn or Wendy Strahm. 2) Participation in Workshops of the Committee on Recently Extinct Organisms. While the conservation of still extant species of plants is of primary importance to the Conservation Committee, assessment of possible extinction must also be considered when a species has not been observed for some period of time. This is particularly true since the US Endangered Species Act effectively removes a species from legal protection once extinction status has been accorded. The various criteria by which extinct determined are not consistent, however, and more objective rules for evaluation are needed. 24

The Committee on Recently Extinct Organisms ( ) conducted a workshop on the development of protocols and mechanisms of dissemination of information on species that have gone extinct since the rise of anatomically modern Homo sapiens . The numerous problems associated with assessment of extinction status are particularly acute with plants and the BSA Conservation Committee was asked to participate in a workshop held in 1999. BSA members George Yatskievych (Missouri Botanical Garden), Warren L. Wagner (Smithsonian Institution), and Bill Hahn presented different perspectives on plant extinction in the US and elsewhere. Portions of these presentations are available on the CREO web site. Additionally, we are contributing data to the CREO extinct species database that will be incorporated into their web site. Other interested BSA members are urged to contact Bill Hahn at the address below. 3) Responding to inquiries. Several unsolicited letters were received from interested parties wishing to volunteer their time to plant conservation efforts or asking of advice and information. Responses to these letters were made and the parties were directed to the requested information or contacts. Final comment The Conservation Committee, with its comparatively new chairman, hopes to increase communication among its members, with the council, and with the BSA membership at large over the course of the next year. The chairman thanks the Officers and members for the help and assistance offered over the past 8 months and looks forward to increased activity and productivity in the future. Respectfully submitted, William J. Hahn Assistant Professor Center for Environmental Research and Conservation Columbia University 1200 Amsterdam Ave.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
