VIRTUAL EDUCATIONVirtual education programs provide additional instructional choices for students in non-traditional settings through distance learning options to satisfy a driver licensing requirement. Inspecial circumstances, school divisions allow students to take the Virginia Association of DriverEducation and Traffic Safety (VADETS) virtual course that is monitored by licensed teacherswith an endorsement in driver education. Taking a virtual course to satisfy a driver’s licenserequirement, however, should not be interpreted as satisfying the tenth grade health educationrequirement.COMMERCIAL DRIVER TRAINING SCHOOL COMPUTER-BASED CLASSROOMCOURSEPlease refer to theonline provider application processfor driver education correspondencecourses and driver training school computer-based classroom driver education programs.§46.2-1702.Code of VirginiaCertification of Driver Education Courses by CommissionerA.Except for schools in the Commonwealth's public school system and providers ofcorrespondence courses approved by the Board of Education pursuant to subsection F of §22.1-205. Code of Virginia for Driver Education Programs, only those driver training schoolsthat are licensed as computer-based driver education providers shall be authorized toadminister computer-based driver education courses. The content and quality of suchcomputer-based driver education courses shall be comparable to that of courses offered in theCommonwealth's public schools. The Commissioner may establish minimum standards fortesting students who have enrolled in computer-based driver education courses. Suchstandards may include;1.requirements for the test site;2.verification that the person taking the test is the person enrolled in the course;3.verification of the identity of the student using photo identification approved by theCommissioner; and4.maintenance of a log containing the name and title of the licensed instructor monitoringthe test, the test date, the name of the student taking the test, and the student's time-in andtime-out of the test site.Computer-based driver education providers shall not issue a certificate of completion to astudent in Planning District 8 prior to receiving proof of completion of the additionalminimum 90-minute parent/student driver education component pursuant to §22.1-205.Code of Virginia for Driver Education Programs.B.Parents should review the virtual course learning objectives, grading policy, privacy and legalpolicies. Contact information for the online course provider, online instructor, and technicalsupport should include hours of availability and expected response time. Learner time in thecourse should be tracked by student activity and work successfully completed, and not justthe amount of time the student is “logged in.” The curriculum must be designed to provide atleast 36 periods of instruction, not to exceed the two hours per day requirement, and be ofCurriculum and Administrative Guide for Driver Education in Virginia 2017
