CLUSTER B PERSONALITY DISORDERS 16 The Cluster B disorders have a strong proclivity to substance use disorders and likewise, the characteristics of both SUD’s and PD’s are very similar. Substance use exacerbates the symptoms of PD’s in maladaptive ways aside from the harsh consequences of using substances. Individuals with PD’s often use substances to avoid feelings, cope with needs, rejections, self- loathing, as well as to achieve a state of mind that feels comfortable. Dialetical and cognitive behavioral therapies using schema-based therapy, mentalization-based therapies and therapies that promote the individual with a PD to associate and connect with feelings of others seem to be the most helpful in symptom management and improving overall functionality. Future research could be used in developing more evidence-based treatments investigating incorporating a Christian perspective. Further, more research and information on the etiologies of these disorders along with treatments to more appropriately assist individuals with PD’s. Much of the research on Cluster B disorders are dated more than ten years ago making it beneficial to examine aspects of these disorders with updated information.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
