Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA]. (2015). Trenching and Excavation Safety. Retrieved from 9. What is the purpose of conducting an engineering survey prior to a demolition project? Describe and discuss the major components of an engineering survey for the demolition of a two-story wood structure. Prior to starting any demolition project, OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1926.850(a) requires that an engineering survey of the structure must be conducted by a competent person to ensure the safety and health of employees at the demolition site. The purpose of conducting this survey is to determine the condition of the framing, floors, and walls, and to prevent the premature collapse of any portion of the structure. The engineering survey provides the demolition contractor with the overall plan for wrecking the structure, where all utilities are located, the equipment that is required to do the work, the manpower that is required, PPE that is required, and what protection to the public must be established. The survey plan should include procedures that should be followed in the event of a fire, cave-in, and if any injuries occur. Another part of the engineering survey that should be considered is the current integrity of the structure. If the structure has been damaged by fire, flood, explosion, or some other cause then appropriate measures must be established and in place to ensure the health and safety of the workers at the site. Control measures such as bracing and shoring of walls and floors shall be taken to protect workers and any adjacent structures. It shall also be determined if any type of hazardous chemicals, gases, explosives, flammable material, or similar dangerous substances have been used or stored on the site. A multi-gas meter should be onsite and used periodically to detect for toxic fumes and the explosive gas limits. If the nature of a substance found at the demolition site cannot be determined, samples should be taken and analyzed by certified professionals before the demolition is allowed to start. The employer and contractors must have written evidence that an Engineering Survey was conducted, and retain that report on-site during the course of the demolition project.
