(Fighting broke out in NC between its citizens L/P). ● In NC small bands of armed men pretending to be either Loyalists or Patriots robbed and killed people and burned down their homes. Both sides of the real armies had left the state so no one could stop these violent attacks. ● Loyalists David Fanning was one of the leaders of these groups. A month before the Battle of Yorktown his band captured more than 200 prisoners in Hillsborough, including Governor Thomas Burke. Even after hearing of the surrender he continued his raids until spring of 1782 ● Summer 1782 British gave up their posts in Charles Town SC and Savannah in GA. They left NY November 1783. The Treaty of Paris ● June 1781, the Continental Congress set up a committee to work out a peace agreement with Britain. ● Committee members for US: John Adams, John Jay of NY, Thomas Jefferson, Henry Laurens of SC and Benjamin Franklin. ● Formal peace talks took place in Paris, France 1782. ● Franklin, Adams, and Jay represented US in France. ● Treaty of Paris was signed September 3, 1783. ● Terms: Britain had to recognize the independence of the US. Borders were set (Atlantic Ocean in East, Mississippi River in West, Great Lakes in North, and northern part of FL in the South). Britain and US agreed to pay back any money they owed each other. ● With independence, these states formed a new nation, the United Colonies. Soon, they would adopt a new name- The United States of
