Imagine that you are a teacher’s aide in a classroom of 2 nd -grade children (7- to 8-year-olds). In each of the following situations, describe the following. A. How you would help them cope effectively with the situation Manual and Damien are playing in the sandbox. Manuel wants Damien’s shovel, so he takes it. Damien begins to cry, but Manuel continues to play, unaffected. Damien comes running to you, saying, “He took my shovel!” Latoya has been standing watching the others climbing the rock wall. It seems as if she’d like to join in, yet makes no move to do so. Tommy has a dilemma. Damien is upset that the shovel was taken from him without him willingly giving. Now, Manuel is playing unaffected about the hurt he has caused. The teacher allows students to speak to state their current feelings (emotional Literacy). Manuel will say why he took the shovel. Damian will say how he felt when the shovel was taken away. Teach would ask the boys how they would like to be treated in the situation. Damian will say what he would like Manuel to do. Manuel will say what he should have done. When children are self- regulated, they control their impulses. They are more likely to think before they speak or act and not behave impulsively (Diamond, 2012) . Therefore, teacher needs to teach proper behavior and allow students to role play a similar situation. The teacher should teach children cooperative play. Give them a group activity where they need to work together to produce an item. Manuel needs to be monitored as he showed lack of empathy while

Damian was crying. Latoya Latoya probably is shy or not sure whether she would be accepted in this group activity. Or it could be that, she would like to play be afraid that she might fail. The teacher asks Latoya her reason for hesitating to play. If it is that she is shy, then the teacher can reassure her that us a very natural feeling. Hesitation in group activities at that age is very common and normal. If Latoya explains that she is afraid of failure, then the teacher can provide Latoya with direction as to how to go about the activity (hints and direction). The Teacher can assign her a partner to assist during the activity. The teacher can also assure her that efforts are praised in their class and success depends on her putting forth effort. If Latoya is normally a shy child, teacher can assist by getting other students to assist her in activities, always remember to include her in activities, be patient with her, be vigilant to observe when she pulls away.
