Challenges of Diversity Physical resources may need to be modified - Toilets or change rooms may need to be added (male/female/disabled/unisex) It may be difficult to be fair to everyone It may take longer to negotiate agreements But the solution may be more robust Can companies have genuine reasons for discrimination? Elements of discrimination Direct discrimination : where a person or group of people are treated less favourably because of a particular attribute where persons without that attribute are or would be treated more favourably in the same or similar circumstances. Indirect discrimination : concerns the use of practices or policies which operate to indirectly disadvantage one group of persons over another. Gender Sexism has its roots in the influence of heterosexuality and the perception of male superiority and pre-assigned roles of the binary sexes Equality is not equal numbers, as women may not have been able to do those jobs Equality is having same opportunities to apply for and to be selected for job, regardless of race, sex, religion etc. and equal pay for equal work Sexual orientation Sex is usually understood as the biological aspect of identity (male/female) while gender is socially constructed Socially constructed identity of gender is fluid; it can change with the lived experience for instance, transgender individuals. Rejecting the biological sex, a transgender person transforms to their true and desired self. However, this comes at the cost of social castigation and fear of backlash from society. The backlash is more prevalent against trans women than transmen. Transmen are perceived to have masculine traits which are considered to be more socially accepted Ethnicity 2.5 million people in Australia speak a language other than English at home 42% of Australians have at least one immigrant parent Almost 25% of the Australian workforce are from a nonEnglish speaking background Royal commission into “Black deaths in Custody” – as significantly high proportion of prisoners taking their lives were indigenous – checking discrimination/bullying/ harassment tactics by police In groups and Out-groups Hill (1990) noted the presence of a perceived hierarchy of ethnic groups in the vehicle manufacturing industry, with English speaking groups at the top, the Southern Europeans below, and others following. Collins (1996) using Australian Bureau Statistics and other publicly available data analysed the socio-economic position of migrants and showed how the different ethnic groups are hierarchically positioned socially and economically, with Anglo-Australians being the dominant group on most indicators.
