Major competitors - Because there are a sufficient number of major and recognizable department stores currently available, such as Nordstrom, J.C. Penney, and Saks 5 th Avenue, the addition of new or unknown firms to tackle on these major names would be extremely difficult. Customers have already created company loyalty being that the industry alone is practically a one-stop shop. High costs of entry – To be entering the retail industry, the new firm would be facing extremely high costs of entry. In terms of retail, which includes both clothing and accessories, Macy’s is a one-stop shop, having a tremendously wide demographic. If a new firm were to be entering this industry, it would need to appeal to about the same large target market. ____. Macy’s is a non-discount, general retail store. Even if a potential competitor were to be able to attain specific deals with brands, the loyalty that customers have will make it difficult for them to attain trust. Supplier exclusivity – Macy’s is a very established company, being in operation since ____. Its competitors have also been in the business for a sufficient amount of time. Macy’s does not produce its own inventory. Because of this, it has to specific brand names manufacturing the items for them. Major clothing brands, such as ___ have a specific contract with Macy’s, having the company exclusively produce and sell for Macy’s and no other competitor. This is practically the same case for all the other competitors. Having such Closing - Therefore in this industry, I feel that the entry barriers are high in preventing entry. While it may prevent entry from small players and medium players, if there is a player with _____, _____, and ____, there is a potential for threat.
