Socioeconomic, Spiritual, and Cultural Factors
NURS 6512, Week 2 Main Question Post:
Culturally competent healthcare providers can adapt to the unique needs of patients from various
cultural backgrounds, developing a trusting relationship between the healthcare provider and the
patient (Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon, & Stewart, 2015).The first way to communicate with any patient is
to first get them to trust you. This is part of building a patient to provider relationship. Each patient
should be treated according to their cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and personal beliefs (Ball, 2015).
By knowing some background information of the patient will guide you to frame your questions during
your health assessment.
The scenario that I was assigned to is BK is a 16-year-old Caucasian female who comes in with her
grandmother for an annual exam. The grandmother reports BK has been “acting strange, staying in her
room all the time and refusing to do all the things she used to enjoy like singing in the youth choir”.
