The closest public middle school and high school are located about 2-3 miles northwest of the community and easily accessible via bike, public transport, and automobiles. Hyde Park is located just north of the University of Texas and just south of Austin Community College. ● Religions What signs of religion do you see? Discuss the types of churches, mosques, temples? What services are offered by these churches, e.g., Day Care, Mother’s Day Out, Summer Camps, Languages Classes, Citizenship Classes, Food Banks, Clothing, other . The churches in this community are mostly Christian based. One of the churches called Our Lady Catholic Church has a sign in front stating they offer classes to learn the Chinese language. Some of the churches have playground which suggest they might have Sunday school classes and/or day care. I did not see any signs stating the churches offered Mother’s Day Out, 4465-4-19_
Summer Camp, Citizenship classes, or food banks. Business & Industry Describe stores and shops available in the community, e.g., grocery stores, gas stations, department stores. What type of business climate exists? Manufactures? Light or heavy industry? Large employers? Small business owners? Retail? Hospitality industry? Do people have to seek employment elsewhere? Is this considered a “bedroom community”- where people work outside this community but live here ? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. One could consider this community to be a “bedroom community” because people work outside of the community due to better employment opportunities. There are some people who do work and live in this community as well. There are a lot of small local businesses in this community such as restaurants including Home Slice, Kome, Foreign and Domestic. The environment of the bars, restaurants, and coffee shops are all small, locally owned, friendly, have outside sitting areas and are enjoyable. There are two gas stations one is a Shell and the other is a locally owned market called Duval Market. Politics What indicators do you see about politics? Posters? Headquarters ? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. The only indicators of politics that I saw was signs in the front yards of a few homes. One of the signs was promoting Beto O’Rourke. I did not see any headquarters for politics. Media Do you see indicators of what people read? Listen to the radio? Watch TV? Are there any signs of media language other than English ? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. There are newspaper stand outside of the Duval Market and Flag store which 4465-4-19_
indicates that people buy newspaper at those locations. I also witnessed people reading books and working on computers while driving by the coffee shops. The only signs I saw that involved media were in English.
