25 Country Background info on teacher education Key policy Curriculum focus ITE CPD Evidence of focus Faculties of Education Studies and Global Citizenship in Ontario (Montemurro, et al, 2014) China 30 CPD is supported by NGOs. National Guidance for Sustainable Development Education (2007) MoE (2003) put a strong emphasis on ESD in national curriculum. SD integrated into curriculum initiatives, e.g. geography, chemistry, physics, science, PE, Chinese and health education. Ministry of Education: National Guidance for Sustainable Development Education (2007): provides information on how to implement ESD into the curricula. Core concepts of ESD related to poverty reduction, food security, peace development and cultural diversity. Some courses have ESD and global themes incorporated but this is largely dependent on teacher educators. CPD in ESD is supported by NGOs, the ESD Research Centre and school awards. School-led training and support via the ESD School Programme and other government-funded initiatives. Focus on ESD in China’s National Working Committee on ESD. - ESD (umbrella term that includes GCED). Costa Rica 31 ITE provided in universities. CPD usually organised by MoE or sometimes at provincial level. Integrated Programme for ESD and Institutional Management EE and ESD normally described as co-curricular / transversal themes. Not formally examined. Often up to individual teachers to include EE/ ESD themes in teaching. No information available MOE provides CPD and organises conferences etc. for teachers and leaders. NGOs play major role in CPD.
