Better knowledge and understandings of pressure ulcers could advance quality patient care throughout the hospital by reducing the number of pressure ulcers in patients that is currently being treated. This could also prevent new cases of pressure ulcers in patients who has risk factors for compromised skin integrity. In the scenario with Mr. J, the CNA’s lack of knowledge in regards to pressure ulcers and what to report could have caused Mr. J’s stay to be extended. The use of pillows or wedges to prop the patient and to keep from off of bony prominences is one technique that could be used to prevent pressure ulcers. The CNA could have insured that the patients who are unable to turn themselves, are being turned to according to the turn schedule. Another specific nursing- quality indicator that could advance the quality of patient care throughout the hospital is overall patient satisfaction. If patients are treated well and are informed about the care that is to be received, patient satisfaction would increase, causing patients to seek medical attention at that facility and recommend it to others. In the scenario with Mr. J, several different staff member and members of the interdisciplinary team failed to notify to Mr. J or is daughter about the incident related to Mr. J’s dietary needs. Not only was that the case with Mr. J, according to the scenario, this has been a common error for several months with this hospital. The lack of communication between staff members and with the patients could possibly be a contributing factor as to why patients of the Jewish faith travel further to seek medical attention at a Jewish facility.
