Now it is one of the most active magazines for design in China. Industrial design education started to bloom in the 1990s. Design programmes began to develop both in arts and in engineering schools. We can count the Central Academy of Arts and Design, the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and the Zhejiang China Academy of Fine Arts among those offering design education in the arts and crafts tradition. Tongji University, Hunan University, Zhejiang University and the Beijing Institute of Technology offer design education in the contexts of engineering and architecture. The developments in the arts and in engineering often took place independently from each other and there were few collaborations between these schools until recently. Today, design education in China has solid roots both in the arts and in the engineering disciplines. Also in the 1990s, a couple of designers set up industrial design firms in cities, such

as Dragonfly Design in Shenzhen and Zhu Jian Hua Industrial Design in Shanghai. These individuals were eager to exploit the field of transportation design, particularly motorcycle and car design. In 1993, Dragonfly Design launched a first family car xiao fuxing (little lucky star) in China. Unfortunately, as the transportation industry itself was still underdeveloped and government policies and license were not open to private industries, the effort was failure. However, this event had an important impact on Chinese design in that period. 426 Into a Changing World Although they may have been premature in their timing, design overall has grown in influence in China during these years. The success of Sundiro s motorcycle which sold over 1.5 million is a good story from Zhu Jian Hua Industrial Design. Its design integrated engineering and production in the local market. During this period, consumers became aware of product design elements and began to recognize its value. Design of the international name brands, imported by joint venture companies such as Panasonic and Philips, is also becoming influential in China. 1996 2002: The Chinese Design Expansion For a long time, Chinese industrial design has advanced only slowly and in small steps. As in other countries, the initial role of design was limited to providing the aesthetics for a product that is, to beautify and lend style. During the phase of early industrialization in China, companies did not see a need to invest in design. Instead, design was a function of either engineering, advertising or packaging. The Chinese term used for designers at that time literally translates into English as the form maker . The debate about the meaning of design and modern art and crafts in academia reflected this. Some report shows that before the end of the 1990s, there were less than fifty industrial design firms in the whole of China (Ye Zhen Hua 2008).
