On numerous occasions, I have heard friends who complained that “oh, if I were ___ race with the same grades (usually Black/Latino), I would’ve definitely gotten in,” but I do not agree with this statement as there are so many factors to differentiate applicants beyond GPA that this seems to be an oversimplification of a complex, nuanced matter. Moreover, if we take the data from the case that sparked this debate, it shows that out of those who had lower grades than the plaintiff and were admitted, 42 were white while only four were Latino and one was black! I believe that Affirmative Action is not an ideal solution, but until we find the best way of achieving true diversity in college admissions (which is also difficult to define – is it racial/socioeconomic/another kind of diversity), AA is important because it is in line with the idea of ‘equity not equality’, and as everyone comes from different racial/socioeconomic/etc. backgrounds, AA helps provide a more equitable playing field. Another problem is that as outsiders to college admissions and because of the vagueness of “holistic” admissions, we we do not have enough information to say for certain what impact(s) AA has.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
