Evidence Supporting Practice ChangeAs ethically responsible nurses, they have the duty to ensure that they are prepared to safely treat their patients. A recent literature that tackled on the transition experiences of new NPs discussed that the participants perceived that their prior nursing experience aided to fill gapsin their NP education (Twine, 2015). This supports the concept that prior nursing experience may be an essential component for a successful entry into NP practice.Another study showed the significance of prior nursing experience in their transition to an NP role. Beggs (2018) reported a study that showed NPs with critical care experience and nursing experience greater than five years showed better prioritization and triage skills. The same study revealed that more prior nursing experience offers a base of confidence that can strengthen and hasten the acquisition of confidence at the NP level of practice (Beggs, 2018). Experience factors may hinder the number of NP graduates from meeting the increasing workforce demand, but it is also important to note that nursing experience prepares the nurses to function more independently as new NPs.ConclusionOne of the effects of the implementation ofthe ACA in the United States is physician shortage. Many patients in the country achieved better access to healthcare through the acquisition of insurance through the ACA, thereby, increasing the demand for physicians. Related articles recommended strategies to address the said health issue through the use of telemedicine and the utilization of NPs in co-managing patients. Both solutions have their advantages and disadvantages that affect Baptist Health System. The utilization of NPs in providing primary care services helped fill the shortage of physicians but created a competing need which declined the number of bedside nurses and increased NP graduates with fewer prior nursing experiences. Baptist Health System’s policy on tuition reimbursement program should
9be reviewed to take into account more years of experience as a better qualifier to accepting NP students within the organization as supported in related studies. Physician shortage is a significant healthcare stressor in the country and for NPs to help fill the gaps, implementation of standard policies in both the national and organizational level could help address this health concern.ReferencesAmerican Association of Nurse Practitioners.
