Another major difference between Antigone and Socrates is their personality or character. Although this could also be a similarity as they also had some similar aspects of their characters. Antigone had a very strong, persuasive, persistent, defiant, foolish and persuasive character as she went against everybody, on her own. She didn’t care what the outcome of that would be, she was not afraid to die therefore she was both very brave and courageous or very foolish and had no regard for life. She knew what the results would be ultimately but she went on regardless because she believed in what she is doing and wasn’t going to allow other people belittle her believes. Socrates on the other hand seemed quite mild and even underestimated his abilities. He was very persuasive and was able to get other people to listen to what he had to say and pass it on. He wasn’t as abrasive and arrogant about his believes but he was equally as relentless.Family background was is a big difference in the case of both Antigone and Socrates. They both came from very different family backgrounds and lived very different lifestyles. Antigone was the 3
Elizabeth Pamdaughter of the King of Thebes, Oedipus. Her mother was also her grandmother because Oedipus had killed his father and married his mother, Jocaste. Oedipus blinded himself and was sent on exile from Thebes because of the horrible act he had committed. Antigone and her sister Ismene went with their father Oedipus to Colonus where he died. When she got back to Thebes, she found out that her brothers Eteocles and Polyneices where fighting for the throne and had killed each other over it. Eteocles and Polyneices, after their father died, had agreed to take turns in being the king of Thebes. They had agreed that Eteocles would spend one year as King and then hand over the throne to Polyneices. But after the one year had lapsed, Eteocles refused to hand over the throne to Polyneices and this led to a horrible battle that ended in the demise of both brothers. From all this information we can conclude that Antigone came from a very dysfunctional family. Her life was complicated right from the beginning all the way to the end. Socrates on the other hand seems to have come from a more stable and humble family background. Socrates was the son of Sophroniscus who was a stones man and Phaenaretē, his mother, who was a midwife. They were not poor, but they were not very wealthy either. They lived a comfortable life. He was a Classical Greek philosopher who laid the foundations for western philosophy. He fought as a soldier in Peloponnesian war with Sparta. He had a Strong religious side to his character and inspired the Socratic Method. He got married to his wife, Xanthippē, who had a reputation for being a nag and a shrew. His life seemed pretty plain and
