agricultural chemicals to continue its pace. Which not only genetically polluted the land, but also overwrote traditional farming techniques. Though, Monsanto’s seeds provided for the greater good for India, utilitarianism, the relief of malnutrition was short-lived. Monsanto chose this route of marketing for the short term investment. Under the influence of egoism, Monsanto simply wanted to make more money with no regards to India’s future. ( 6a ) Seeds of suicide, or terminator technology, are seeds that can only be planted once. Once the seed is planted and harvested, the crop will not reproduce, preventing farmers from harvesting and storing that seed for future use. Biotechnology companies use this technology to control the industry and farmers by forcing farmers to continuously purchase seeds in order to continue growing crops the next year.

MONSANTO VS CONSUMERS 7 ( 6b ) According to Gordon Conway, his idea of a second green revolution would be a genetically modified seed that protects both the plant and the natural resources while still yielding a substantial amount of crops. ( 7 ) Biotechnology companies do initially help people in developing countries but, the aid that it provides is short lived as genetically modified seeds consume natural resources much more rapidly than non-genetically modified seeds. GM seeds are able to yield faster results at the cost of more resources, which in return is providing food for the starving. But, as the resources deplete, the land becomes stale and unable to grow plants ever again. Also, once the plants are introduced in foreign areas, it will pollute the land all around it, creating a chain affect and eventually making all other areas stale. ( 8 ) I believe it is ethical for biotechnology companies to make billions of dollars in profit. Under egoism, everyone should be acting in self-interest. Like everyone else, biotechnology companies are simply acting in self-interest and generating as much revenue as they possibly can. Also, under cultural relativism, the trend of society is to go to school, get a good job, make a lot of money, and possibly make a name for oneself. Biotechnology companies are doing just that. They are making a lot of money while leaving behind a history that the future may look up to and follow. ( 9 ) There are numerous reasons why consumers, farmers, and researchers oppose the use of genetically modified crops. Not only because these crops can pose health risk for consumers and the environment, but also because it reduces the genetic heritage of a variety of crops. Under the influence of utilitarianism, the actions of those fighting against GMO are ethically correct as GMO harms consumer health. Despite the negative consequences of such technologies, large corporations do not care about the consumer’s concerns and continuously

MONSANTO VS CONSUMERS 8 promote GMO products to increase their profits. These biotech corporations even go the extra mile and donate money to universities and researchers so that their studies would be favorable to the industry. As a result, while consumers, farmers, and small public interest groups are trying to
