society would not have been able to function without this retrograde institution. ^ The structure of the economy and the form of property had a need for such an institution. The personality cult also manifested itself in more discreet forms than in the case of Ceausescu or Kim II Sung, but in all of the Stalinist socialist societies, the "Number One Leader," like Kadar and Gorbachev, was infallible, above all criticism, in an unassailable position. The hostility pent up during Stalinism against the institution of the head of state is reverberating today against certain actors who seem to personify this very institution: Yeltsin and Kravchuk, but also Walesa, Jelev, or even Havel. The trial of the Ceausescus is an example of the inadequacy of Western social scientific concepts for the understanding of Eastern events. The echo of tbis trial has been immense, eclipsing that of Ceausescu's downfall from power. Tbe trial unfolded in the purest Stalinist style which scandalized the entire world. The outside world overlooked the simple fact that two or three days after the fall of Ceausescu, amidst street fighting and attempts by those faithful to the dictator to organize armed resistance, no one would have been able to implement a normal trial. Tbe mere disappearance of Ceausescu did not spontaneously democratize the institutions with their ingrained Stalinist practices. The trial could not have been anything but the clumsy preliminaries to an execution. ' Pavel Campeanu, Exit: Toward Post-Stalinism (Armonk, N.Y.: M.E. Sharpe Inc., 1990).

THE REVOLUTION 919 Deploring the judicial farce, certain Western colleagues passed judgement based on the standards of a state of law in a situation where not only is a state of law lacking, but where there was neither a state nor a law. In Romania, a bloody revolution broke out, and bloody revolutions have never ensured the rule of law. The mere fact that there has been a revolution in Eastern Europe—one that is different from the American, Erench, or Russian model—hardly finds a place in the ideas of certain Western colleagues, as well as some in the East (including Romania). Even they underestimate the revolutionary nature of the shock of '89; rejection of the revolution is common in intellectual circles of the East. The theorizing expression of certain inadequately controlled disappointments and denial of the revolution generally go hand-in-hand with denial of the transition. In what follows, we present certain theoretical facts for a study of the relationship between the anti-Stalinist revolution and the transition toward post-Stalinism, starting with the case of Romania. Revolution and Transition In order to examine the relationship between revolution and transition and its relevance to tbe current situation in Romania, it is useful to first set the terms of this relationship.
