Debs, against the Pullman Company and the United States Government, lasting from May 11 to July 20, 1894. This massive strike resulted in the deaths of 30 labor union workers, the shutdown of commercial and industrial rail lines west of Detroit, and, ultimately, the dissolving of the ARU William Jennings Bryan William Jennings Bryan was an American orator and politician hailing from Nebraska. Cross of Gold The Cross of Gold Speech, delivered by William Jennings Bryan during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on July 9, 1896, was a speech that was in strong support of bimetallism, or “free silver.” In this oration, Bryan asserted that bimetallism would bring prosperity to the nation, and he decried the gold standard in his famous line, “you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.” Turner’s Frontier Thesis Turner’s Frontier Thesis was a conjecture by historian Frederick Jackson Turner that was published in 1893 that asserted that American democracy was strengthened by the continued expansion and movement of the frontier line. Turner’s ideas garnered much appraise in America, even becoming an integral part of educational course materials. Indian Wars The Indian wars in the 1800s were especially brutal, costing hundreds, if not thousands, of lives on both sides. Cruelties endured by the Indians via massacre and shoot-on-sight tendencies of members of the US military begot cruelties by the Indians upon the white American settlers, including an instance where a caravan of 81 soldiers and civilians were ambushed and brutalized.
