Venable counts some of the world’s most famous artists among its clients, but also represents journeymen and up-and coming artists. GETTING HIRED Vault’s Verdict: Candidates prove their worthiness to Venable in several ways, including prior work experience, top grades from competitive schools, and a combination of low-key demeanor with a go-getter attitude. Hiring Process • “The firm is looking for motivated ‘self-starters’ with strong people skills, ambition, and a personality that fits with the culture of the firm. The firm frequently hires from local schools, particularly George Washington Law School, American University, and Georgetown.” • “Venable has a well-deserved reputation for obsession with personality fit, although I think the culture here is shifting to be more like your typical law firm. Accordingly, it seems that incoming candidates seem judged more on traditional criteria (grades, experience, etc.), although personality is still a huge factor.” • “The firm hires a lot of students from GW and American, but I think they are trending toward hiring those from higher- tiered schools. They are very choosy about personality—they look for individuals who are very intelligent, diligent, but good-natured.” • “Other large firms focus exclusively on law school pedigree while I believe Venable finds that top students at lower ranked schools can have a stronger work ethic and greater sense of loyalty than middle-of-the-road students at top schools.” Interview Questions • “Interviewers are looking for some knowledge of the law firm environment, but overall it was a good, interesting and comfortable conversation.” • “Why are you interested in Venable as opposed to the other similarly sized firms in the area?” • “Make sure to tailor your preparation for the practice group you are interested in. If for example, government contracts, be able to state why and what sparked your interest in that specific group, etc.” • “‘Tell us how you have handled a challenging situation,’ and ‘What made you apply to Venable?’” Lateral & Clerk Integration • “Very little efforts by the firm to integrate laterals. Laterals are basically expected to perform as junior partners because we had barely any guidance.” • “We don’t quite fit with the first years or with those who’ve always been at a firm or have previously been at a firm. I think that lateral orientation could be a bit more involved and direct.” • “It didn’t feel like there was a specific integration effort made, but my practice group was very busy and just folded me into the work flow.” OUR SURVEY SAYS Vault’s Verdict: Associates say that Venable’s a great place to work because of its hours that leave room for outside lives, a warm and cordial culture, and an open-door policy. Although base salaries were recently increased, some associates wish bonuses would be bumped up too.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
