Planned Language Supports: I will use the turn-and-talk strategy for the students to discuss with their partners. I will also have sentence stems for the students that typically struggle in math. Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks Anticipatory Set: Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions Whole-group discussion on carpet connecting the students’ prior knowledge of place value and number lines. Students will engage in a whole-group discussion that reviews their understanding of place value and number lines. They will be engaged in the discussion by using the RecordEx board to activate
The teacher will have the RecordEx board on to guide the discussion around using number lines and rounding whole numbers to the nearest 100. their prior background knowledge and have fluid conversations about the topic. Presentation Procedures for New Information and/or Modeling: Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions The turn-and-talk strategy will be used for students to discuss their predictions about the newly introduced vocabulary words that will be presented during the lesson. The teacher will give clear definitions and she/he will create an anchor chart for the entire class to refer back to during the lesson. Students will be taught to round by using a number line. 259 ---------200---------250---------300--------- 259 rounds to 300 (nearest 100) Students will write the following in their math journal: When working with a 5 or greater in the tens place the hundredths number will round up and you will add two zeros to the end of the number. If you have a 4 or less in the tens place the hundredths number will stay the same and you will add two zeros to the end of the number. Examples: 261= 300, 512= 500 Students will use the turn-and-talk strategy to make predictions about the newly introduced vocabulary words that will be presented during the lesson. Students will write the following in their math journal- Students will be taught to round by using a number line. 259 ---------200---------250---------300--------- 259 rounds to 300 (nearest 100) Guided Practice: Activity Description/Teacher Student Actions
The teacher will guide the class as a whole through the rounding whole numbers to the nearest 100. The process used to solve the word problem will be modeled by the teacher and discussion will take place during the lesson. Teacher will guide the following problem: What number has 7 tens and 5 fewer ones than tens? Students will have a place value chart, for example- What number has 7 tens and 5 fewer ones than tens?
